AbstractIn this study, we investigated the hemodynamics in the frontal association cortex during monotonous working. The frontal association cortex in the cerebral cortex was used for higher brain processing. Thus, activation of the frontal association cortex during monotonous working was an indicator of the brain loading. In the experiment, time-series variation of oxygenated hemoglobin (oxyHb) increased in response to working level. Additionally, time-series variation of oxyHb was indicated possibility depending on whether the subjects facilitate the work, suggesting that near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) was useful for evaluation of the work smoothness.

titleIndependent Zooming of Text and Chart to Read Documents on Mobile Devices Efficiently

AbstractWeb pages and documents with some charts may be commonly read on mobile devices such as smartphones, cell phones and PDAs. However, the display size of these devices is usually too small to read such documents. This study proposed a method to browse documents with independent zooming of text and charts. In this method, pinching on text changes the font size only and pinching on a chart changes its size only. The result of our experimental evaluation, comparing with the current usual method, shows that the proposed method did not reduce the operating time, but reduced the number of operation. Subjective evaluation showed that the participants felt the method easy to use and wanted to keep using it.

AbstractImprovement of customer satisfaction demands that restaurants share customer requirements among staff. Nevertheless, conventional information sharing methodologies such as oral communication and human memory can not avoid losing much of that valuable customer information. We developed an information sharing system based on mobile devices, point-of-sale systems, and kitchen displays to improve sharing of information among restaurant staff. The system was introduced to two Japanese restaurants to examine its effectiveness. Results show the following: 1) kitchen and cooking staff members can improve customer complaints related to dish and drink delays properly using mobile devices; 2) service staff members can offer more careful service by sharing customer information using mobile devices. Information input processes of mobile devices should be simplified to realize smoother information-input operations.

AbstractThis study was conducted to compare the typing performance of subjects inputting alphabet characters using software keyboards on tablet devices and hardware keyboards (n=106, 19-79 average 44.4±20.3 years of age). As the results, input speed decreased and the input error increased in elderly people. Input speed was slower and error rate was higher when using non-dominant hand than using dominant hand or both hands in case of software keyboard.
